Dade City, Florida, is the county seat of Pasco County, and is surrounded by the communities of San Antonio, Darby, St. Leo, St. Joseph, Lacoochee, Trilby, and Ridge Manor. With an estimated current population of just under 7,000, Dade City is a small town located 30 or so miles from Tampa. Its town slogan is “Proud Heritage, Promising Future.”
Historically, Dade City’s primary industries have been agriculture and cattle farming, though today, residents can find work in other professions as well. The town is home to Pasco-Hernando Community College and Saint Leo University, Florida’s first Catholic college. Other major employers are the Pasco County School System and Pasco Regional Medical Center.
Dade City and the surrounding areas are known for citrus production, particularly of the kumquat (Chinese for “gold orange"), a small, oval-shaped fruit that is a member of the citrus family. Each year in January, Dade City hosts the Kumquat Festival, an event that features activities for the entire family, including live music and food. Other town events include the Country Christmas Stroll, a steeplechase, and a “Classic Car Cruise-in.” Dade City is also home to the Pioneer Florida Museum.
